Funmi & Chidi are getting married

Ẹ káàbọ̀ · You're invited

This invitation is for you, our people

A Yoruba family, an Igbo family, two days and one very big party in Ibadan. Come hungry, and wear shoes you can dance in.

Saturday 11 December 2027Ibadan, Nigeria

until we say “I do” at 10:00 am, Ibadan time.

A note from us

Dear friend,

Seven years ago, in the lunch queue at a buka near UI, Chidi pointed at Funmi's plate and said “the same as her.” He was not ready for the ewedu. She laughed for a full minute, then showed him how it is done. Since then there have been Yoruba lessons with her grandmother, ofe onugbu lessons with his mother, and one very sweaty proposal at the top of Bower's Tower.

Now we are making it official, with two families, two languages and a frankly alarming amount of food, and the day would not be complete without you. Come and eat with us, dance with us, and pray over us as we start married life.

With all our love,Funmi & Chidi

Your people, my people

Whither thou goest, I will go; and where thou lodgest, I will lodge: thy people shall be my people, and thy God my God.

Ruth 1:16

Your fabric

A print with your name in it

At an owambe, the family wears one cloth. We printed you your own. It grows from your name, in our colours, and your initials are hidden somewhere in the pattern. Look closely. Same name, same cloth; roll again for a new design.

Printed for Funmi & Chidi.

The gist

How we got here

Meet

Funmi

Born in Ibadan in 1997. Pharmacist, amala loyalist, and the loudest laugh at any party she attends.

Meet

Chidi

Born in Enugu in 1995. Civil engineer, Rangers fan, and now the only Nwankwo who can prostrate properly.

  1. 2020: The same as her

    Agbowo, Ibadan · 14 October 2020

Chidi was three weeks into a new job in Ibadan and could not read the menu at the Adebayos' favourite buka, so he pointed at Funmi's plate and said “the same as her.” The ewedu slid off his fingers, down his shirt and into family legend. She laughed, then taught him the wrist move. He asked for her number with ewedu still on his collar.

The same as her, please.— C. · Agbowo · 14.10.20
  2. 2021: Lessons, both ways

    Bodija ↔ Enugu · 2021

For a year, Saturdays meant Yoruba with Ìyá àgbà, Funmi's grandmother, who started with greetings and moved on to proverbs he still gets wrong. Funmi took the night bus to Enugu to learn ofe onugbu from his mother, who made her wash the bitter leaf until her hands turned green. Six tries in, the verdict: “It is coming.”

  3. 2026: He asked at the top

    Bower's Tower, Ibadan · 22 August 2026

Chidi said he wanted to see the whole city before dinner. At the top of Bower's Tower, out of breath, he asked in Yoruba, then in Igbo, then in English to be safe. Funmi said yes in all three. At the bottom, both families were waiting with a talking drum, which is how half of Ibadan knew before our phones did.

        A few details

Anything else, message our planner on WhatsApp at +234 800 000 0000.

        Should I bring a gift?

Your presence is the gift. If you would like to give something more, everything is under Gifts: pick something off our wish list, or give towards our first home from Nigeria, the UK or anywhere. At the reception, envelopes rather than spraying, please.

How do I get my access card?

Once you reply, your access card is emailed to you two weeks before the wedding. It carries your name, table number, venue address and a QR code for check-in. Save it on your phone or print it, and if anything looks wrong, message our planner on WhatsApp.

My table is still unassigned. Should I be worried?

Not at all. Tables are assigned in the final week, once every reply is in. Your access card will show your table on the day.

Can I bring a plus one, or my children?

Each access card admits only the names printed on it. If your card says “and guest”, you are welcome to bring one. We love your little ones, but the reception is an adults-only evening so that everyone can relax.

What is the aṣọ ẹbí, and where do I get it?

For Friday's engagement, the bride's family and friends wear aṣọ òkè in Adebayo emerald with gold gele or fila; the groom's side wears George wrapper in Nwankwo hibiscus with gold. Aṣọ òkè is available from Aunty Bimpe and George from Aunty Uju, both until 30 September 2027. Not sure whose side you are on? Pick one; both will feed you. Saturday has no aṣọ ẹbí: colourful formal in our colours is perfect.

Is there parking at the venues?

Yes. Chapel of Grace has its own car park with ushers directing, and The Palmwine Pavilion has a secured car park with valet. On Friday, park on the street in Bodija and follow the sound of the drummers. If you are using a ride-hailing app, the drop-off point is the main gate at every venue.

        Where should out-of-town guests stay?

We have held a block of rooms at a hotel in Jericho, five minutes from the reception and fifteen from the chapel. Mention “Funmi and Chidi” when booking for the wedding rate, valid until 12 November 2027. Message our planner on WhatsApp and she will send you the booking details.

        Gifts

        Your presence is the gift

Truly. Bring yourselves and your prayers, and that is everything. If your hand still finds something to give, there are two ways: pick something off our wish list, or give towards our first home.
